One of the most frequent topic that we encounter from our customers is regarding the piano serial number.

Some of the questions asked are

• What is a piano serial number?
• What does it indicate?
• Where can I find it on my piano?

Well, we hope this article clearly explains what a serial piano number is about and what you need to know. Here goes:

What is a piano serial number?
Answer:

The serial number is often regarded as the birth certificate of a piano. It is a unique, individual running number, usually made up of four to seven digits e.g 19091 and/or a mixture of both alphabets and digits e.g M579624
What does it indicate?
Answer: A piano serial number identifies

• the age of your piano
• the piano’s year of manufacture (Yamaha serial number lookup, and Kawai serial number lookup)
• the production and history of the piano, including the factory process, manufacturing country, technology, etc

Where is the serial number on a piano?
Answer:
A) Upright serial numbers are usually located on the inside of the piano. Lift up the lid of the piano, and look inside:

• On the piano’s cast iron plate, along the top front area of the plate. The serial number will be located either at the top left, top right or in the middle (near the logo).
• It may also be stamped on a little plaque on either the left or right side of the edge panel.
• At times, it could be stamped on the back of the piano, usually at the top or the bottom of the structure frame, etc

Grand pianos are wing shaped and are also known as horizontal pianos because of their length and placement of strings.

They are the largest piano type, and also the most majestic. The grand piano’s signature timbre is reliant on the quality and workmanship of making, and also on the length of its strings and soundboard.

Grand pianos produce finer tones and have the most responsive key actions. The longer strings allow frequencies to resonate from a larger surface area, projecting a more balanced, richer and full bodied sound across the room.

Due to this, they are often the choice of most serious pianists who can afford them. Grand pianos are suitable for larger size rooms that can accommodate them.

Different piano manufacturers named their grand piano types differently depending on the length sizes. Examples below also shows what is the difference between a grand piano and a baby grand piano.

Examples:

• Yamaha piano [here] categorised their grand pianos into only 3 types – baby grand (below 6′), classic grand (between 6′ to 7′) and concert grand (over 7′), whereas
• Kawai piano [here] categorised their grands up to 7 types – baby grand (below 5’2″), classic grand (5’5 to 6′),  conservatory grand (6’2″ ), chamber grand (6’7″), orchestra grand (7′), semi-concert (7’6″) and concert grand (9′).

Well, restoring a used piano is not only a very tedious and time-consuming process but requires well-trained and experienced piano technicians to work on it too.

With over 30 years of experiences in the industry, we at Pusat Muzik LKS Setapak Sdn Bhd are now able to produce at a daily rate of up to 8 units of fully-restored pianos.

All the used pianos are handpicked and imported by batches directly from Japan. These yet-to-restored pianos are safely stored at the large warehouse before sending them to our factory.

To simplified our complex restoration process, we summarised it into 7 main stages.
